(CNET) -- Silicon Valley police are investigating what appears to be a lost Apple iPhone prototype purchased by a gadget blog, a transaction that may have violated criminal laws, a law enforcement official told CNET on Friday.
Apple has spoken to local police about the incident and the investigation is believed to be headed by a computer crime task force led by the Santa Clara County district attorney's office, the source said. Apple's Cupertino headquarters is in Santa Clara County, about 40 miles south of San Francisco.
Editors at Gizmodo.com, part of Gawker Media's blog network, said in an article posted Monday that they paid $5,000 for what they believed to be a prototype of an impending iPhone 4G. The story said the phone was accidentally left at a bar in Redwood City, Calif., last month by an Apple software engineer and found by someone who contacted Gizmodo, which had previously indicated it was willing to pay significant sums for unreleased Apple products.
The purpose of an investigation is to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to file criminal charges. Spokesmen for Santa Clara County and San Mateo County--home to the Redwood City bar--declined to comment. Representatives for Apple and Gawker Media did not immediately respond to interview requests.
CNET has not been able to confirm whether the investigation is targeting Gizmodo.com, its source who reportedly found the iPhone in a bar, or both. Apple acknowledged that the lost device is their property and asked for its return; Gizmodo has since said that it has returned the device.
Late Friday, Bloomberg reported that it spoke to Gaby Darbyshire, Gawker's chief operating officer, and she said that law enforcement officials had not spoken with anyone at the company. The wire service also reported that a San Mateo County prosecutor would not confirm an investigation but said that, "if there is a case that is investigated and able to be submitted for prosecution, it will be handled by this office."
The tale of a lost iPhone may sound trivial, but Apple goes to great lengths to protect the secrecy of its products, and the company has not been afraid to take aggressive legal measures in the past. It filed a lawsuit against a Mac enthusiast Web site, for instance, to unearth information about a leak. A state appeals court ruled in favor of the Web sites.
Apple argued in that case that information published about unreleased products causes it significant harm. "If these trade secrets are revealed, competitors can anticipate and counter Apple's business strategy, and Apple loses control over the timing and publicity for its product launches," Apple wrote in a brief.
Under a California law dating back to 1872, any person who finds lost property and knows who the owner is likely to be but "appropriates such property to his own use" is guilty of theft. If the value of the property exceeds $400, more serious charges of grand theft can be filed. In addition, a second state law says that any person who knowingly receives property that has been obtained illegally can be imprisoned for up to one year.
Any prosecution would be complicated because of the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of the press: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that confidential information leaked to a news organization could be legally broadcast, although that case did not deal with physical property and the radio station did not pay its source.
The computer crime task force is called REACT, which stands for Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team, and was established in 1997 with a goal of working closely with Bay Area technology companies. In the past, for instance, Apple has contacted REACT to report an employee who sold over $100,000 worth of computers on eBay. REACT also has investigated denial-of-service attacks targeting local firms.

Wii-like phone unveiled
Sony Ericsson F305
(AFP/iafrica) -- Sony Ericsson, the Swedish-Japanese phone maker, on Tuesday unveiled a Wii-like handset which allows users to play games using the phone as a motion sensor.
"This is our first foray into motion gaming," Howard Lewis, vice president and head of the product business unit, said of the F305 mobile phone launch held in conjunction with CommunicAsia, an industry convention and exhibition.
"We see gaming as a way to interact with our young customers ... it's a new area of the market that Sony Ericsson is entering into," he said.
With the F305 phone, the device itself acts as a motion sensor when playing pre-loaded games including bowling and bass fishing, the company said.
Japanese videogame giant Nintendo Co.'s wildly popular Wii console is known for its innovative motion-sensitive controller.

Monster Cable goes wireless with HD kit
Today, in honor of cable's tru2way agreement with major CE and IT companies, Panasonic is holding a demonstration in the National Press Club of a Panasonic VIERA Plasma HDTV that can receive HD interactive, digital cable service without using a separate cable set-top box. (PRNewsFoto/Panasonic)
NEW YORK (AP/google) -- Monster Cable Products Inc., the company that's synonymous with expensive video and audio cables, is going wireless.
On Thursday, Monster is introducing a set of two boxes: a receiver that plugs into the back of a high-definition TV and a transmitter that connects to a DVD player or other components of a home entertainment center.
The transmitter can send an HD video signal wirelessly up to 30 feet to the receiver, using so-called ultra-wideband, or UWB, technology from Sigma Designs Inc.
"This is our Monster Cable-less solution," joked Monster Cable president Noel Lee, in an interview.
The Monster Digital Express HD boxes will be available in October for $299.95 each.
Wireless HD connections are a hot field in consumer electronics, with many companies trying different technologies to solve the problem of maintaining a steady flow of wireless data at very high speeds. Ultra-wideband, a relatively novel technology, is a leading contender.
In January, Westinghouse Digital Electronics showed off an LCD TV for the commercial signage market with a built-in UWB receiver chip and a matching transmitter.
A consortium that includes Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp. and Intel Corp. is promoting another wireless technology they call WirelessHD, with transfer speeds that are even higher than UWB.
Other manufacturers, like LG Electronics, are betting on run-of-the-mill Wi-Fi as the wireless link. Wi-Fi is a tried and true technology for data networking, but is less than ideal for streaming video because of interference from other Wi-Fi gadgets.
"We had opportunities with lots of other systems that just didn't have the quality of service," Lee said. "(Sigma) is the first partner we found ... that has a robust enough technology."
The Monster transmitter will "upscale" non-HD signal sources, like DVDs, to HD resolution before transmitting. The receiver plugs into a High-Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, port on the TV.
To back up the short-range wireless capability, the boxes can also connect via coaxial cable to reach each other in different rooms, up to 330 feet away.

Sony PSP continues to rock Japan
(techradar) -- Japan’s weekly gaming bible, Famitsu has released the latest hardware sales figures for the Japanese market, with Sony’s PSP storming ahead with an amazing 270,750 PSPs sold in a month – giving Sony’s handheld 37.3 per cent market share.
While the PSP’s fortunes outside of its homeland have been somewhat less successful for Sony, it’s clear that the company has been doing something right in Japan that it’s not been doing quite right elsewhere – notably, releasing plenty of successful games that Japanese gamer’s continue to lap up.
360 continues to fail
The PSP was closely followed in the latest Japanese gaming hardware charts by the Nintendo Wii, which sold 220,052 units over the same month, grabbing a 30.3 per cent chunk of the Japanese hardware market.
Nintendo’s DS Lite was in third place in the chart, selling 163,930 units, which equates to 22.6 per cent of the market.
Fourth, fifth and sixth in line, respectively, were Sony’s PlayStation 3, having sold only 34, 674 units (4.8 per cent of market share) Sony’s PS2 having sold 29, 569 units (4.1 per cent market share) and – bottom of the pile yet again - Microsoft’s Xbox 360 selling 6,883 units (0.9 per cent market share)
Sony Ericsson W53S Now Has 100 Faces
Sony Ericsson W53S and its 100 faces. Credits: KDDI / Sony Ericsson Japan
(softpedia) -- First released back in October 2007 for the Japanese market, Sony Ericsson W53S is now available with no less than 100 different faces, created either by Sony Ericsson, Disney or by famous designers from Tokyo or around the world. This makes the device the "most customizable" mobile phone created until now.
Although it doesn't have the high-end features of BRAVIA SO906i, another handset recently released by Sony Ericsson in Japan, the W53S will probably attract users thanks to the fact that it can easily change its appearance. I must admit that the image with the 100 faces of the handset does look impressive – although some of the faces are unattractive (to me, at least).
By default, the W53S comes with only one face but users can buy any of the other 99 faces (also known as panels), or even all of them, and can change the appearance of the handset everyday, according to their mood.
Aside from the 100 faces that Sony Ericsson W53S can have, the features of the handset include: a 2.7 inch TFT internal display with 240 x 432 pixels and 260 colors, a 1 inch OLED external screen, built-in GPS with maps, a 2 Megapixel camera with auto focus, flash and video recording, a "Jog Dial" navigation pad, Web and email capabilities, Media player, access to music and video online stores, two 3D stereo speakers, mobile wallet, 100MB of built-in memory and microSD card support. Coming in a clamshell form factor, the W53S weighs 117 grams and, when closed, it measures 107 x 49 x 20 millimeters.
Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson W53S and its 100 faces are only available via au KDDI and only in Japan. Therefore, users who might like the handset and its faces but don't live in the Asian country will probably never get the chance to buy a W53S.

Apple enhances gaming capabilities for iPhone and iPod Touch

(tmcnet) -- We're about to find out how serious Apple is about gaming.
On Monday, Apple is expected to unveil the next generation iPhone and, along with that, a virtual store from which iPhone and iPod Touch owners can download new programs, including games.
The potential of the iPhone and iPod Touch as portable game consoles stirred a writer from Forbes magazine to suggest this week that Nintendo's reign over the handheld market with the DS is over.
The DS has a touch screen, but the iPhone and Touch will have a touch screen and motion sensitivity, like a DS and Wii blended into a single, delicious cocktail.
Checkmate, Nintendo DS.
While I'm sure Apple executives enjoy reading those kinds of worshipful predictions, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll come true.
A big part of Nintendo's success (in fact, perhaps the single reason Nintendo is still in the game business) is the immense popularity of the company's internally created franchises.
Mario, Metroid, Zelda and Pokemon are all superstar franchises that no other console has.
Apple will have to develop its own exclusive roster from scratch.
That's not impossible, but it will, at least, take several years and a lot of money.
Apple does have a big opportunity here, though, and the quality and quantity of the first batch of downloadable games announced Monday will go a long way in telling whether gamers are getting a legitimate handheld or just a new way to play the same old, crummy cellphone games.

BenQ’s New T850 8M Digital Camera Has Users Smiling
(designtaxi) -- BenQ announced the launch of the world’s slimmest 8-mega-pixel digital camera, the T850 with 1600 ISO, 3x optical zoom and smc PENTAX lens. Sleek and compact at 14.9mm thick, the T850’s chic stainless steel casing (available in black or red) reflects the minimalist operating ease of the camera. Exceptional efficiency and user-friendliness are made possible by the highly intuitive photo taking and photo editing functions, which center around smartly organized circular touch buttons on the 3” TFT LCD screen.
Furthermore, almost all camera functions can be accessed and engaged by using one of three simple finger movements: tap, circle, swipe. In fact, the T850 standouts among touch screen cameras as the only one employing a natural “swipe” gesture for viewing photos and video. A comprehensive selection of options including “Smile Catch”, Auto Face Tracking, Z Lighting, advanced photo art, scribble & scrawl and Quick Bar make the T850 a fabulously fun companion for bringing enjoyment and quality to today’s digital life.
Photo Taking So Simple, It’s Second Nature!
Spontaneous, quick, spur-of-the-moment. Such is what defines that special moment so precious to capture in a photo. And that’s exactly what defines the T850: controls and menus so simple and second nature that capturing a spontaneous moment is a snap. No pressing button after button to navigate through multiple menus. The T850 has pared down complex camera operations to a minimalist, logical approach. Circular touch buttons (just the size of the fingertip), which can be pulled up instantly on the extra-large screen, get users to the right setting fast so the moment isn’t just a memory. Plus, the T850 features a Quick Bar that gives users even faster access to 80% of all photo taking needs. For customized convenience, users can add three of their favorite functions to the Quick Bar. Intelligently designed touch-screen icons that clearly represent their functions further eliminate the confusion typical of other complicated camera menus.
Tap, Circle, Swipe for Easy Navigation and Photo Editing
Once pictures are taken, users can easily view and enhance photos via three types of finger motions on the screen. To reset the focal point, simply tap the preferred spot on the screen, and the T850 will re-center and automatically refocus the image. To enlarge a specific portion of the image, simply draw a circle around the location with your fingertip. The T850 will instantly perform a 12x zoom to the circled area. Plus, by using the picture cropping mode, users can save the enlarged image as a new image. Playback is no longer a pain with the T850’s ingenious functionality, which includes “swipe” recognizing ability – it’s the only camera currently available to perform functions with a simple finger swipe across the screen. While reviewing pictures, swipe a finger right to left across the screen to see the next picture; swipe left to right to see the previous image. When playing video or audio content, users can tap the playback bar forward (advance) thus eliminating the hassles of restarting the content from the beginning every time.
The T850 is also equipped with advanced photo art functions. Touch screen capability lets users free-hand scribble and scrawl fun captions and drawings to photos. In addition, users can select from a numerous callout balloons and photo backgrounds/frames.
User-Friendly Conveniences
Despite a minimalist approach for operational ease, the T850 is packed with an array of thoughtful features for picture-perfect results. A high ISO 1600 lets users take pictures in dim lighting without artificial flash. “Z Lighting” enables users to adjust the image’s lighting after the photo has already been taken. The T850’s brilliant “Smile Catch” mode captures every elusive smile by automatically shooting in rapid succession, stopping only when the shutter button is pressed again. Competitors’ similar function can only shoot up to six times in succession. And for capturing life in fractions of second – such as for action shots – a “12 Burst” feature snaps 12 pictures in one second! Crisp, clear, well-defined pictures are guaranteed with a Super Shake-Free setting and Auto Face Tracking, which can fine-tune up to nine faces in one frame – perfect for scenes with many people. The T850’s 30 preset modes range from standard auto and video to more exact settings such as "Museum," "Party," "Beach" and "Fireworks."

Apple Reportedly Looking At Solar Power For Mobile Devices
(informationweek) -- Apple is reportedly looking into solar panels as a power source for handheld devices and portable computers.
A recently published patent application discovered by the Apple enthusiast site MacRumors.com describes a technique in which solar panels would be built behind a portable device's LCD screen. From that location, the panels could absorb ambient light that passes through.
The technique would eliminate the need for Apple to redesign its iPods and laptops to make room for the new technology, MacRumors said. Among the problems with using solar panels on devices are durability and the need to take up valuable space on the compact devices.
Apple isn't the first to consider this technique for using solar power. Motorola describes a similar approach in a 2001 patent described in the blog TreeHugger.
Apple and technology companies routinely apply for patents on technology that may never find its way into products.
The U.S. Patent Office this year granted Apple a patent that describes a new instant messaging interface for touch-screen devices, such as the iPhone and iPod Touch. The technology lets users manipulate chat conversations in real time by editing old chats. It also enables people to embed video and images, which is something the iPhone can't do today.
In April, Apple filed two patent applications that describe improvements in head-mounted displays, which typically combine one or two small display screens with magnifying lenses inside a helmet or glasses. Apple claimed in the applications that its approach provides a "a wider field of view and [creates] a more natural viewing situation for a user of a head-mounted display, which results in improved comfort and usability for head mounted displays."
In March, an Apple patent application filed described a three-dimensional display system that could be used in computers for displaying 3-D images.
Apple doesn't comment on future products.
