Sophos Warns of Mac Trojan Malware

(pcworld) -- Security consultant Sophos is warning of the appearance of money-grabbing Trojan Horse malware aimed at Macs

The firm isn't being alarmist with news of the Imunizator Trojan, which makes false claims that Macs have privacy problems as part of its attempt to install itself. Sophos advises users not to panic.

The Trojan, also known as Troj/MacSwp-B, tries to scare Mac users into purchasing unnecessary software by claiming that privacy issues have been discovered on the computer.

"Windows users are no stranger to scareware like this, but it is rarer on the Mac. Nevertheless, the discovery of this Trojan horse does follow fast on the heels of other malware that has been identified on Mac OS X in recent months," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. full story

Windows Vista Falls To Hackers. Linux Remains Unbroken

(wired) -- CanSecWest has claimed its second victim. After last week's pwnage of a MacBook Air, there were two notebook computers left to win by hacking them: one running Widows Vista and one running Ubuntu Linux. The Linux box remained uncracked, but hacker Shane Macaulay successfully compromised a fully patched Vista system using a Flash exploit.

According to The Register, the attack took a good deal longer than Charlie Miller's two-minute subjugation of the MacBook Air. Macaulay's attack was initially neutralized by Windows Vista Service Pack One, but after some more work he and his accomplice Alex Sotirov managed to route around it with a little javascript.

The perpetrators get to keep the Fujitsu U810 and $5,000 as a prize. Might we suggest that the first things they do is to wipe the Windows install and load it up with Hardy Heron.

Apple secures Japanese iPhone naming rights - 3G release all but certain now

(digitalworldtokyo) -- A seemingly insignificant press release from a Japanese company we’ve never even heard of has suddenly set tongues wagging about everyone’s favorite rumor – the fabled 3G iPhone.

Nagoya-based Aiphone chose this week to tell the world that it has been in talks with Apple since last summer about giving the US firm the right to use the ‘iPhone’ trademark in Japan.

You say iPhone, we say…

The possible conflict arose because, although ‘Aiphone’ and ‘iPhone’ are spelled differently in English, the Japanese rendering of both is exactly the same.

Aiphone the company says it has “reached a friendly agreement with Apple” that allows both to use the Japanese version within Japan.

Naturally, we have to ask why Apple should even bother going to such lengths unless it has concrete plans to bestow a 3G iPhone upon the GSM-free islands of Japan.

London, March 29 (topnews) -- Experts have claimed that the fears expressed by campaigners in the US about the world’s most powerful particle smasher posing a threat to the planet, do not hold any ground.

According to a report in New Scientist, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is nearing completion at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva, Switzerland.

The collider will simulate conditions less than a billionth of a second after the big bang, by smashing protons together at enormous energies. Physicists hope to resolve long-standing questions, such as why particles have mass and whether space has hidden extra dimensions. full story

The American support occurred as Iraqi troops struggled against strong resistance in Basra and retaliation elsewhere in Shiite areas - including more salvos of rockets or mortars into the U.S.-protected Green Zone in Baghdad.

It was the first time American jets have been called to attack militia positions since Iraqi ground forces launched an operation Tuesday to clear Basra of the armed groups that have effectively ruled the streets of the country's second-largest city for nearly three years. full story

Skinnier second-gen iPhone "out by Christmas"

(gadgetshow.five.tv) -- Apple is gearing up to unleash an entirely new 3G iPhone by the end of 2008, according to research firm Gartner.

Based on info gleaned from his Asian electronics industry contacts, Gartner's iPhone specialist Ken Dulaney believes Apple has ordered as many as 10 million additional iPhone units for delivery before the end of the year, each of which will sport a new OLED screen, which could mean a thinner body and less power consumption - so an even longer battery life could be on the cards too.

These new iPhones will also be 3G compatible for improved on-the-move web access, as Apple feels the current model's appeal in Europe has been diminished by its sluggish EDGE connection.

Analyst statements like this should always be taken with a generous pinch of salt, but many of them have been on the money (or near enough) in the past, so we could well be seeing that mythical 3G iPhone in a tighter-fitting suit before the year is out.
